What causes bruising after a therapeutic massage?
I am wondering if anyone can tell me what exactly causes bruising after a good therapeutic massage. I’ve tried to Google the answer, but I can’t seem to find any real explanation.
I do know that for some people it is a "normal" after affect. I am wondering WHAT exactly is the cause. It isn’t because the therapist went to hard, it could also partially be due to the good strong pressure, but I know there is another reason… I just don’t know what that reason is.
Thanks everyone ![]()
Sorry to say bruising is indeed not normal. Bruises are ruptured capillaries or veins that cause the blood to surface. That particular massage therapists is manipulating to rough. It’s not safe or healthy for bruising to occur after any massage. Its suppose to be therapeutic no damaging.
Is there any research supporting the claim therapeutic massage removes toxins from the body?
I have started an exercise program and with it have come the associated aches and pains. I’ve visited a therapeutic massage clinic and it seems to help. After the massage, I’m told to drink lots of water to "wash out" the toxins released from the massage. I do drink lots of water, but I suspect few, if any, toxins are removed by massage therapy. Any thoughts?
You can research this subject all over the internet. There have not been many in depth studies about the benefits of massage, though the Touch Institute has some research published. The word "toxins" is misleading, and therapists believe many different things. The only thing that is really proven is that cellular waste is flushed out of cells during massage since you are increasing blood flow (circulation, fresh oxygen and nutrients) to the area, and drinking water promotes healthy cellular function.
Do you like to get therapeutic massages? Now be nice now – this is a serious question:)?
I love to get them, but a good massage therapist is usually so expensive. There is a good one near my home that my fiance went to recently who only charges $35 for an hour. I hope to go soon – hopefully this week:)
I don’t think its the wrong category……massage is healing, healing comes from God. I only like therapeutic massages using YL Essential oils…..I have been healed by them so for me, its YL or nothing!

Chiropractic? or Therapeutic massages?
I have a horrible back pain. I think it´s a muscle knot and I´ve had it for 3 months now. I don´t know what to do. Should I take care of it with chiropractic massages? or therapeutic massages? I don´t know. I am not familiar with this things, please HELP!
and also… no matter what the answer is. can someone tell me the difference between these two? Thanks!
Hello there! Well first off, the difference between Chiropractic and Therapeutic massages. Chiropractic is certified more as a doctor (sort of) and they do a lot of concentration on realigning joints and help them function better. Therapeutic massages are just that: therapeutic. They concentrate more on the muscles using relaxation techniques.
For your issue, go for Therapeutic all the way!! I have been in your position, only my knots I carried for *years*! I would get horrible migraines! You should know that it is painful to work them out. What I would do is go to your general practitioner and ask for a referral to a physical therapist. I went to one, had about 25 sessions and they helped SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much! I treated myself to a Japanese steakhouse with all the money I saved on buying Excedrin. Plus, if you go through your doctor your insurance might cover it, where as some insurance companies will not cover a chiropractor.
I still get my migraines, but not near as bad. Good luck!
